What can you buy for the average home price of $448,862?

The real estate numbers are in for April, and once again, they were up, up, up. According to the Canadian Real Estate Association, the average home price for resale homes across Canada jumped 9.5 per cent last month from a year earlier, hitting $448,862. A lot of that gain was driven by two markets in particular—Toronto and Vancouver. Strip those out, and the average home price increased by 3.4 per cent to $339,893.

But how much home can you get for the average price of $448,862 in different cities across Canada?

VANCOUVER
Address: 15155 Dove Pl., Surrey, B.C.
Asking price: $449,000

There simply isn't a house for sale in the actual City of Vancouver, detached or not, that can be had for the average national price. So it's off to Surrey we go. Distance to downtown: 30 km. By transit, it'll take a bit over one hour. The quickest route downtown is by car (35 minutes depending on the traffic) but commuters will be dinged $150 a month for the toll on the Port Mann Bridge.

CALGARY
Address: 736 17 Ave. NW Calgary
Asking price: $448,800

If brevity is a virtue, the listing for this home in the city's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood is saintly. "SMALL HOME,good LOKATION,LAND VALUE ... DOGS ON SITE!" Small is right. The entire house is just 600 sq. ft. Sitting just 3.5 km from downtown it's a 12 minute drive or 25 minutes by transit.

REGINA

Asking price: $449,000

The house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and is a featured home on heritage walks through the neighbourhood. It's 3 km to downtown—about seven minutes by car, 10 minutes by transit.

WINNIPEG
Address: 548 Waverley Street , Winnipeg
Asking price: $449,000

The house has four bedrooms, three bathrooms across roughly 1,650 sq. ft of floor space. It's 6 km to downtown—a 13 minute drive or 27 minute trek on transit.

TORONTO

Asking price: $449,000

This 1,624 sq. ft. detached house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It's about 2 km to downtown—seven minutes by car, 19 minutes by transit.
