Pitches Store at 45 Swindon Street is a beautifully restored and enlarged Category 2 Heritage listed building in Ophir's main street. The building has been fully earthquake strengthened during the restoration process. It sits on a 1,969 sq m (more or less) section across two titles.
The original building dates to 1883 when it was built as a general store for John Pitches, a merchant from Victoria in Australia who achieved some commercial success in Ophir (then called Blacks) in the mid 1860's. It is the last surviving of several general stores which Ophir boasted in its boom days.
