Salci, a charming medieval town built as a fortified village located at an one hour drive from both Rome and Florence, first appeared in a decree of 1243. The village is built around two multi-purpose courts linked by a gate topped with elegant loggias and totals 5.200 square meters of various buildings.
The largest court which was used as a market, is surrounded by buildings for the servants and the army and a mill and a parish house. On the smaller court there are the ducal palace and the church dedicated to San Leonardo. The loggia on top of the gate, which connects these two squares, supplies a private entry from the palace to the church.
The access to the borgo is marked by two opposite entrance gates.
The property also holds a “castelletto” (minor castle) of almost 1,900 square meters with ceilings up to 11,5 meters high, which is situated on a hill top overlooking the fortified village. It used to be the dwelling of the tenant of the estate. At the end of the 1800’s it was remodelled in neo-Gothical style according to the likings of that era.
Perennially contested between various lords in 1568 Pope Pius V turned Salci into a duchy. A prominent owner was Vittoria Guerrieri Spinola, daughter of the king of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II. She used the estate amongst other purposes for the breeding of thoroughbreds.
The Borgo and the Castle are located on 50 hectares of land, including woods and other surfaces, which can be amplified up to 300 hectares. The stables currently present hold up to 25 horses, but local laws allow the creation of new buildings, for a total of 3,500 square meters.
The property needs thorough restoration and is suitable as a luxury relais, a golf resort, the breeding of thoroughbreds, a wellness centre etc etc
